‘The K’, Culture and Convention Center, Kornwestheim
Project Description
The building project includes the refurbishment of the existing culture center including a theater, a ballroom, and a restaurant, as well as the integrated new construction of a three-story reinforced concrete building containing a library, a book storage, offices, and convention areas.
In the atrium area of the new part, a striking spiral staircase serves as a central element of circulation within the building. The stair is built as an in-situ concrete structure having a load-bearing inner balustrade.
The refurbishment require extensive modifications of the original structural system as column reinforcements in the basement or a cautious hybrid reinforcement of the existing reinforced concrete theatre roof applying light steel trusses.
For weight saving, the new concrete slabs have been designed and realized as sustainable hollow slabs combined with thermal concrete core activation as an innovative method for building temperature control (heating and cooling).
